Ring Sizing or Resizing Tips
Check Your Size More Than Once
Your ring should fit snugly on your finger without risk of falling off. Not too tight. Not too loose. You do not want to be hurting yourself or putting too much pressure on the ring or your finger getting it on and off. It should just be able to fit over the largest part of your finger which is often the knuckle for most people. Keeping this in mind; it is really important to check your ring size more than once which applies to both a simple home check or even a proper sizing in-store with a jeweler. Your fingers will swell in warmer weather and vice-versa in cold weather. This is particularly important for wedding and engagement rings as they will be worn everyday for a long period of time. Check your size on a cold day and again on a warmer day. Checking two or three times is not going too far because getting it right the first time could save you time, frustration and on potential resizes.
Think About The Type Of Ring
Did you know that wide rings require a bigger size? This is because wider band has more friction than thinner band as we slide it onto our finger. Bands approximately 6mm wide or more generally require a slightly larger size for most people. Narrower rings allow your skin to move to either side of the band and often leave that tell-tale 'ring mark' on your finger when you take it off. Wide bands don't allow this so much which means there is 'more finger' under the band. And don't forget that some rings may not allow sizing to your size depending on the design and how many extreme size up or down you want to go to.
Make Regular Checks
Don't forget to give your rings regular checks. Check them for wear and look for any cracks in the band or any obvious thinning of the metal which is causing serious bending due to normal wear and tear after a long time of wear. It is always much better for your ring to get onto band wear earlier rather than later. And if you are getting to the point where you can only get your ring off occasionally because it is too tight or it is regularly slipping off; it's probably time for a resize. No one wants to have their ring cut off or worse, have it slip off and lose it!

Ring Resize FAQs
- How many size can a ring be resized?
- Some ring design has a ring resize limitation. To preserve the structural and integrity, we will have a recommended size limit for some design. Usually up to 2 size up or down is tolerable.
- Which is easier or better? Resize up or down?
- Resize either up or down are the same. Depend on the design, especially some that has side stones, resize down can make the side-stone to become loose at which we will re-tight all of the loose stones after we resize it.
- How do you resize a ring?
- For yellow gold and rose gold resize up, we will cut the bottom of the ring, add the gold and weld the ring back into a solid one piece again followed by smooth filing, polishing and clean the whole ring again. To resize down, we just cut the bottom, use the extra cut out piece to weld it back onto the cut off place so it is again one solid piece and followed by the whole process to make the ring look like new again after resize. For white gold, the process is the same but with added rhodium plating on the finishing process because all white gold has to be re-rhodium plate to look white again. For platinum ring resize, we will cut the bottom of the ring, use platinum to weld the ring back together into one solid pieces without using white gold solder. Although white gold solder is faster and easier, we always does and recommend the right way which is to weld the platinum back together so there will be no discoloration or scene at the resize place and no crack at the resize place later on.
- Can resizing a ring damage the ring?
- Eternity ring cannot be resize. If attempted, it will most likely damage the structural and integrity of the design. So we don't recommend to resize an eternity ring. Resize a ring can only be damage if the goldsmith is not skillful enough to do the job especially with platinum ring resize. When done right, resize a ring will not damage the ring, and we at OR DIAMOND are expert at ring resize.
